The centrepiece of the vr holding room at the Eureka Skydeck is the 3D-printed model of Melbourne.

The model is surrounded by six tablets with interactive, augmented reality windows into Melbourne pasts showing the development of the city from pre-settlement to the future.

Landmarks of Melbourne are built and presented on the timeline with synchronised animation.

Our approach to this unique feature was to utilise procedural city building algorithms based on historical data to create a smoothly animated city, growing through the ages.

The large scale 3D Model of Melbourne CBD was 3D printed at a 1:1000 scale. The model holds over 184 pieces and was printed continuously on 2 printers for over the equivalent time of 240 days. The printing was completed by Area One.

The interactive AR tablets allow visitors to scroll between 8 periods of the cities history, seeing actual 3D projections of the historical footprint of the city at each era from pre settlement, to 1836 early settlement, 1880, 1920, 1980, 2020 and future Melbourne.

Built with support from city of Melbourne previously unreleased historical data showing footprints.

The data was interpreted and projected by Monash architecture professor Dr Tom Morgan - Morgan is a Lecturer in the department of Architecture.
